Do you want to get toned or bulk up?

Are you recovering from an injury but still need to exercise?

Do you want to improve your athletic performance?

Do you want to feel confident with your body?

Do you never want to diet again. Instead want to finally reach a healthy weight and be fit, trim and sexy. Lose it the right way, so that it is maintainable?

Do you want to wear whatever you want? Clothes shopping will no longer be a depressing activity which you have learned to dread.

Do you ever see a look in a magazine, or on a mannequin and say I want to wear that, and be able to?

Want to be better able to play with your kids.

Are you tired of not having the fitness or energy level to run, chase and carry your kids. Tired of being so easily tired?

How would if feel to be able to stop feeling judged by the number on the scale. Thinking, I hate being weighed at the doctor office.

Would it feel good to wear a bathing suit without shame?I will sweat on the sidelines rather than be seen in public in a swimsuit.

Sum it up..YOU want to lose weight so that YOU can be healthy and enjoy my life.

If you answered “YES” to any of these questions, then you have adequate reasoning to hire a personal trainer. While you can certainly accomplish all of these goals on your own, there are some advantages to having a personal trainer that might improve the quality of your fitness regimen. As Personal trainers serving Scottsdale we will give you:

A fitness evaluation. The evaluation will help us as the trainer determine what kind of shape you are in, and how we will need to design your workout program. We will ask about your health history, medications, and experience with exercise.

A personalized exercise program designed specifically for you. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to fitness training. Each persons needs and goals are different, and as your personal trainer I will custom design a plan that acknowledges both the shape you’re in and the shape you want to be in.

Supervised exercise. As personal trainers we will give you undivided attention to make sure you are sticking to your program, using proper form and technique, and that you are getting the most out of your workout without getting injured. The benefits of your program will be explained to you and I will recognize when you’ve reached certain milestones.

Motivation. There’s nothing like having a trainer give you words of encouragement throughout your workout. This helps with the mental part of getting in shape attitude is everything! If you think you can do it, then you ABSOLUTELY WILL do it!

Expertise. Good personal trainers are experts in the field of exercise, nutrition, and motivation. We believe that we are some of the BEST. We are there to give you advice that extends beyond your time with us. We will educate you about dieting and lifestyle modifications so you know what to do on your own as well. As good personal trainers we strive to be a fountain of knowledge!

What you need to do to be strong off the tee, in the fairway, and on the green.

Don’t think golf puts specific demands on your body? You must not be a golfer. If you understand the need for a golf-specific regiment in the gym, read on to learn about the exercises that will help you feel better and hit the ball farther every time you go to the country club. If you are in Scottsdale, and would like a Golf Fitness Specific Assessment, we can help you find the exact exercises you should be doing to improve your game now.

Prone Bridge – Start by lying on the floor with your face down. Lift your body with your toes and forearms, keeping a straight line from the heels of your feet to the back of your head. Hold this position for 10 to 20 seconds and repeat. This improves your core, a portion of your body that is essential for good balance and form in your swing.

Pelvic Thrusts – Lying on your back, bend your legs toward the ceiling at the hip. With your arms flat on the floor by your side, lift your hips a few inches off of the floor and return to your original position. Repeat 15 times. This will also work your core muscles.

Horizontal Rotator Cuff Rotation – Standing straight with arms out to either side at shoulder level, allow your elbow to bend at a 90-degree angle. With a weight in each hand, lift the weights toward the ceiling, keeping your upper arm still. Return to the original position and repeat. As a strong rotator cuff is vital to your golf swing, perform this and other rotator-cuff exercises regularly. However, if you have any rotator cuff pain, avoid these exercises to avoid aggravating your injury.

Standing Torso Twist – Place your feet a little wider than shoulder-width apart and place a bar (it can be a broomstick) across your shoulders, holding the bar in place with your hands. Then, twist slowly and deliberately from the right to the left, feeling your abdominals tighten with each movement. Repeat 10 times. This movement obviously correlates to your golf swing, and so will the benefits.

Reverse Barbell Wrist Curls – Sitting at the end of a weight bench, hold a bar in your hands, palms down. Place your forearms on your thighs and let your hands hang over your knees. Next, raise your hands simultaneously. At the peak of the repetition, return to your original position and repeat 10-20 times. Maintaining perfect control over the placement and distance of your putting requires perfect muscle tone and strength, and reverse wrist curls help you tone and strengthen a vitally important golf muscle.

Lunge with a Twist – Holding a weighted dumbbell or medicine ball, stand upright with your arms straight ahead, holding the weight. Step forward with one leg and rotate your upper body to the same side. Return to your starting position and repeat with the other leg. Perform the exercise on each side 10 times. Awkward as the exercise feels initially, it pays off in the long run, adding speed, distance, and power to your gorgeous golf swing.

On the Way Out

When you’re about to head out for a round of golf, you never forget your lucky putter or your favorite pair of gloves. But there may be something you forget that puts you at a disadvantage. What are you forgetting? To stretch.

Toss these golf-friendly stretches in your golf bag for a safe and improved round.

Shoulder: With one arm across your chest, grab the arm by the elbow using your other hand and pull the arm toward your chest. Hold for a few seconds and repeat with the other arm.

Chest: With your arm outstretched, place your hand against a wall, doorway, or tree. Lean forward on the outstretched shoulder until you feel a stretch in your chest. Hold for a few seconds and repeat for your other arm.

Back: Kneel on the ground with your arms stretched out in front of you. Allow your arms to slide away from your body as you shift your hips backward toward your feet. Once you feel the stretch, hold for a few seconds and repeat by performing the stretch to both the left and right sides.

Thighs: Holding a chair, table, pole, or tree for balance, stand straight and bring one foot up to your hand. Hold for a few seconds, relax, and repeat with the other leg.

Let’s face it, some days you just don’t feel like exercising.

You get too busy, too stressed and quite simply too tired.

Here’s a list of 13 of the top reasons to exercise. Pull out this list and read it when you’re having one of those days.

1.	To Prevent Disease
Exercise has been proven to reduce the risk of just about every single health problem known to man, from stroke to heart disease to cancer and osteoporosis. Exercise is also a great defense against type 2 diabetes, which is one of the most widely growing diseases of our time.

2.	To Look Great
Exercise firms your body, improves posture and even makes your skin glow. Looking your best is a wonderful result of regular exercise.

3.	To Lose Weight and Keep It Off
Exercise burns fat and prevents future fat storage. If you want to have a thinner, healthier body, exercise is the answer.

4.	To Have More Energy
Anyone who exercises regularly will tell you that they are more energetic, less easily irritated and are more peaceful.

5.	To Sleep Better
Exercise boosts energy levels, but also wears you out. It makes you feel more vibrant during the day and sleep better at night.

6.	To Age Slower
Exercise is one of the most effective ways to fight aging. When you age your body loses muscle and bone, while the loss of both are drastically reduced with regular exercise. Exercise also helps reduce inflammation.

7.	To Relieve Back Pain
In most cases, the best thing that you can do for back pain is to move and strengthen those muscles. Consult your physician or physical therapist for guidance.

8.	To Ease Depression
Exercise has been proven to reduce depression – sometimes even as effectively as medication. Just chalk this up as yet another amazing benefit to exercise.

9.	To Reduce Aches and Pains
By strengthening muscles around your damaged joints you’re able to use exercise to reduce joint pain and overall aches. Always consult your physician before starting an exercise program, especially if you have chronic joint pain.

10.	To Stay Mentally Sharp
Exercise has been shown to improve memory and other cognitive functions, and seems to have a protective effect against dementia. A Harvard University researcher called exercise “Miracle-Gro for the brain.”

11.	To Enjoy Your Lifestyle
Whatever it is that you love in life – your kids, travel, sports, fashion – it is all more enjoyable when experienced in a fit and healthy body. Exercise so that you are able to enjoy all the great things in life.

12.	To Reduce Sick Days
People who exercise regularly are 50% less likely to call in sick to work. A regular exercise program reduces colds and upper respiratory infections.

13.	To Boost Confidence
Being fit, feeling healthy and having energy are all building blocks to having great confidence. There is no better confidence booster than sticking with a regular exercise program.

Regular exercise gives you so many amazing benefits, as you’ve seen from the above list. Call 602-516-4225 or email me today at andrew@fitnessbyandrew.com to get started on the exercise program that will change your life forever.

Getting a grip on one of the least utilized and most needed parts of your exercise routine.

Maybe you fell out of love with pull-ups because they didn’t require any fancy gym equipment to perform. Or maybe you prefer to stay on the treadmill. Then again, you may have left pull-ups behind because they’re so stinking difficult to perform.

Whatever your reason for not getting any pull-ups in your regimen, it’s time to put excuses away and lift yourself to a stronger, healthier you.

Building Strength

There are plenty of ways to bulk up. You can drink protein shakes and lift lots and lots of weights. But sometimes, you can beef up without ever increasing your strength very much. This is very evident if you consider yourself to be fairly buff, but find your body balking at the pull-up bar.

By working to do one, two, five, 10, and eventually 25 pull-ups, you give your body an incredible amount of strength that simply doesn’t come through other exercises. With a single pull-up, you work a variety of muscles. From the biceps to your forearms, to all sorts of muscles running through your back, pull-ups work them all. But that’s not all. Do pull-ups frequently enough and you can enjoy stronger grip with your hands and improved cardio.

A Helping Hand

Are pull-ups too difficult for you to pull off? These days, you have an option. At your local gym with your personal trainer, there is a technique using power bands or using a pull-up assist machine that reduces the amount of weight you have to pull in order to complete a pull-up. So you may want to start with these.

But before you go with the pull-up machine, take heed! Get used to using the machine, and your goal of doing pull-ups on your own may never be accomplished. If you want to do pull-ups to increase your strength, there is no substitute for working at full-fledged pull-ups – even if you fail time and again. Keep trying despite your failures, and you’ll soon be knocking out pull-ups like a pro.

Diverse Options

If you think pull-ups are one size fits all, you’ve not been paying attention. Just like with push-ups, pull-ups work different muscles depending on where you put your hands.

Parallel Grip: Grab a parallel pull-up bar and you’ll work your back and arms in the safest, most ergonomically correct manner possible. Face your palms toward one another and get going!

Close Grip: By placing your hands no farther than a fist apart on a straight pull-up bar, you can grow and strengthen your back muscles by your armpits, your forearm muscles, and the muscles under your biceps. Flip your palms over and do the same thing in the chin-up position, and you’ll work different back and arm muscles.

Shoulder Width: Known as the standard for increasing upper body strength, pull-ups performed with your hands shoulder-width apart feel more natural than other positions and give you an incredible workout. Flip your hands over for a chin-up position, and continue your routine.

Wide Grip: If you’re looking for a stronger upper back, look no further than wide-grip pull-ups. By holding the bar with your hands far apart, your back gets an intense workout, while your other muscles are almost entirely left out of the picture.

Technique

While you may want to begin your first pull-up with your chin already on the bar, that’s not the way to get the full benefit of your pull-ups. Instead, start your pull-up routine at a dead hang. And between each pull-up, don’t jerk your body back up to the bar immediately after leaving. Allow your body to return to the dead-hang position.

Doing these two steps makes your pull-ups much more difficult, but they’ll also ensure you maintain full range of motion in your muscles. Ultimately, these little steps allow your body to be its strongest before, during, and after your pull-up routine!

For Golf Fitness

Strengthening the large muscles of the back, such as the Latissmus Dorsi, will translate to creating a Greater amount of force when striking the golf ball. Strong and flexible muscles in the back will give you greater chance of staying on plane through your downswing. As you know staying on plane throughout your golf swing will lead to both greater accuracy and distance.

Path to Flat Abs with your Scottsdale Personal Trainers

By now, you have seen countless articles promising you an easy way to flat abs, or seven exercises that will create flat abs in just three weeks. The truth is that these are simply lies. Yes, exercising your abdominals will help you to create flatter more toned stomach, but the key word here is “HELP”. In order to actually decrease the size of your abs you have to lose the fat that is covering them.

Here are some of the more basic principles behind the real way to lose inches and increase muscle tone:

Cardio workouts: in order to burn fat, you need to raise your heart rate for sustained periods of time.

Only work your abs in the direction you wish them to go: If you do crunches by forcing your abs out, you effectively train those muscles to protrude. Instead, do exercises that focus on pulling your abs back toward your spine.

Work in all three directions: do a variety of ab exercises that bend you forward, laterally and diagonally (twisting).

Focus on posture: stand up straight and pull your abs in; bad posture can contribute heavily to a belly pooch.

Check your diet: if you are eating a lot of gas-producing foods or eating on the run (which causes most people to chew and swallow too quickly) some of the stomach bloat you notice may be the result of your body working to digest food or passing gas through the GI tract. You should also avoid high-fat foods at all costs.

Lower your stress: studies have shown that the body, when under stress, stores more fat cells in the belly. Avoid activities such as smoking and not getting enough sleep that increase cortisol in the body.

Work all your muscles: your body is like a machine in which all components work together to perform. You should never focus on strength-training only one muscle group. For example, well developed back muscles are essential to strong abdominal muscles.

Achieving flat abs comes down to three things: getting plenty of cardiovascular exercise, doing full-body strength training that includes a variety of ab exercises, and adopting a healthy diet.
